Abstract
The study of the conduct of the Defense from 1810 to 1860 is presented from the prospective of facts rather than from the development of a theory, neither from the design of a public policy, as we often see in present times. Therefore, the selected methodology is aimed to put into context the guidelines of the defense sector through the historic evolution of Chile as a newly republican nation. During that period some political partisanship criteria can be observed in the conduct of the defense, opposite to the need of professionalizing the armed forces, logically due to the different juridical understandings at the moment of the building of political regime. The Presidency of Manuel Montt (1851-1861) affected by two revolutions, will be the ending point of this analysis, and its effects delayed the perfectionism of the armed forces until the last decade of the XIX Century, when they achieve their complete consolidation.
