THE ROLE OF BRAZILIAN ARMED FORCES IN MULTIDIMENSIONAL SECURITY

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the Brazilian Armed Forces’ participation in multidimensional security activities, as well as its effects on the thematic of Defense. In order to reach the proposed objective, the qualitative methodology of research was used, with analysis of many sources about this subject, such as bibliographic, legislative and media. Based on these analysis, it exposes the origins of the national armed forces and the contrasts between the mechanisms for internal security and external defence. In addition, it presents a debate involving Defense and Security Studies, the main activities carried out by the militaries of Brazil in terms of multidimensional security, highlighting the Brazilian military´s role in the historical process of political evolution in the country, with an active presence in national development projects, especially throughout the 20th century, after the change from monarchy to republic. Finally, it concludes with insights about the impacts of the multidimensional security actions over the National Defense.
