MIGRATION AND SECURITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Main Article Content

Abstract

The present research aims to address the ongoing issue of migration and its linkage with security. Migration is defined as the movement of people from one place to another either through international frontiers or within a State. This phenomenon has reached unprecedented levels of growth, challenging national security in complex and various ways. However, the changing perspective of national security does not allow viewing migrants as a threat. In this regard, the unsafe security conditions and the fact that a state cannot provide for its citizens is the real threat as it is this what triggers migration. On this basis, both governments and intergovernmental agencies should not only focus on finding the causes of this phenomenon, but also plausible long-term solutions that tackle the causes instead of their effects.
