MARITIME PIRACY AND ITS IMPACT IN THE MARITIME TRANSPORT. THREAT OR RISK FOR CHILE?

Abstract
Maritime piracy has not been a threat to Chile as it has not registered attacks in its territory and only eight ships of Chilean nationality have suffered its attacks between 1991 and 2019. However, maritime piracy is a risk for Chile, because it could affect its maritime transport. This article presents the main records of maritime piracy and it analyzes the Chilean economy, projecting the risk that this threat implies to maritime transport. The results detail as referent objects exports and imports in relation to GDP; the maritime transport; main destinations and main origins with its respectively good; and the seaport with high economic value.
